Rainbow River: Queer history on the Thames’ edge

Friday 10 September | 12noon

Tickets start from £15 Book here

The River Thames. It’s a nice place to have a walk around. From the docks, to wharves, housing estates and back street boozers – steeped in heritage: but did you know of the queer history woven into the history of this stretch of the waterway? Rotherhithe and Wapping has remarkable queer history and Sacha and Sheldon, two tour guides and LGBTQ+ historians, have researched a tour that is just as good as time travel.

Travel back to 1780 for a glass of Mother’s Ruin at the The Widow In Masquerade. If you’re lucky you might meet the infamous Female Soldier and hear their tales of genderbending infamy! Or how about the creative hub that Derek Jarman had in his studios in the shadow of Tower Bridge in the 1970s? Perhaps a stroll to The Prospect Of Whitby in the 1800’s where flamboyant local queens and slumming gentlemen might join you for a Hot Toddy? Queer history galore all within easy reach from the Brunel Museum.

The meeting point will be the forecourt of the Brunel Museum at 12pm. The nearest transport link is Rotherhithe station on the London Overground.
