I know artists’ statements often start with qualifications and training. I have an M.A. (in Classical Studies, specialising in ancient depictions of love) and am working towards an MEng (specialising in design and structures). What does this have to do with drawing?
I’d always considered myself incompetent in the arena of art. When I begun my engineering degree, I started looking for things that might make companies more interested in taking me on. I started volunteering here at the Brunel Museum, and took the opportunity to speak to visitors who worked in engineering. A frequent complaint from employers was that newly qualified engineers could rarely draw, and that this was an important skill. So I decided to learn to draw.
I learnt from books and from You-Tube, and joined several inspiring online communities.
Doing drawing exercises to improve fine pen/pencil control, I fell in love with drawing intricate patterns. The enjoyment kept me practicing, and this exhibition is the result.
