Director’s Diary: The Hon Sir William McAlpine Bt

In Memoriam
Sunday 13th Fawley Hill Museum.
Sir William McAlpine was one of the first enthusiastic patrons of The Brunel Museum, always ready to fill the gap. A keen Brunel collector, he was the first to loan objects to the museum, which came from his own very extensive collection. He lobbied other organisations to follow suit, and so our own collection began. He never missed a fundraising event, and some of them involved dancing girls, fire hoops or even more eccentric. In 1993 he helped organise an underwater banquet – on a railway train (which he provided) – in the Thames Tunnel, and brought with him a party of enthusiasts. Sir William attended all our Tunnel Banquet charity events and always  proposed a very witty toast. He offered beautiful items for silent auction, and then bid extravagantly for other items to take away. He was not only generous with his time, he was very generous with down to earth help: when we needed to remove plinths, he sent labourers, drills and equipment; when local children needed concrete for a sculpture garden, he sent a lorry and a few cubic yards with some fencing. Mind The Gap. There was never a gap too big for him to mind. We miss him and we mind very much

This week we present at the Museums & Heritage Show, at the Asian Women’s Group and at Mencap. We are shortlisted for Cultural Achievement Award by Southwark Excellence in Business. Visits from University of Third Age on Wednesday, hipsters on Thursday and cocktail lovers on  Friday and Saturday.
